Van Gogh painted many self-portraits in Paris in 1887 because he could not afford models. Here he wears a summer straw hat, painted in the short, broken brushstrokes he had picked up from the Impressionists. The canvas was painted on the back of an earlier work, The Potato Peeler.

Where to hang it: A striking portrait for a study, bedroom or reading corner.
